Quick start guide

Introduction

Thanks for purchasing the CrispyTuner! This document will help you get started, and hook you up with industry-quality vocal tuning in no time.

Note that we won’t cover all of the CrispyTuner's features here. If you are looking for a detailed explanation of all the options, please refer to its user manual.

Installation

The CrispyTuner and ScaleFinder are distributed with an installer that guides you through the installation process. The installer allows you to select the formats in which you want the plug-in to be installed, i.e. VST3 and AU (macOS only). If you know which plug-in format your DAW supports, you can disable all the others, but if in doubt, just leave them all checked during installation.

The installer also installs a ReWire device. This is required for the graphical mode to be as user-friendly as possible.

When opening the CrispyTuner or ScaleFinder for the first time, you will be asked to enter your license key. Your license key was displayed to you on the website when you bought the product, and in an email that was sent to the address you provided. After activation, you won’t be asked for the license key again on this device!

Setup

First of all, add the CrispyTuner plug-in to an audio track in your DAW.

The CrispyTuner should always be the first plug-in in the effect chain, as it works best on an unmodified audio signal.

We highly recommend you to enable input monitoring in your DAW so that you can hear yourself while recording with the vocal tuning applied; this makes performing much more satisfying, and allows you to explore the different sounds you can achieve with the CrispyTuner more easily.

Getting started

When opening the CrispyTuner’s GUI for the first time, simple mode is active. This mode makes it easy to set up vocal tuning for even a complete beginner.

To get started, you only need to set the key of your song, and play around with the tuning knob until you achieve the desired effect.

Set allowed notes

The CrispyTuner needs to know which notes are allowed on the scale, and which ones are not in the key of the song and must therefore be avoided. The CrispyTuner will correct the pitch of your voice to only use the allowed notes.

It is extremely important that you specify the root and scale correctly, otherwise the tuned signal will sound wrong and off-key!

To set these notes, choose the key of your song by setting the values of the root and scale dropdowns. For example, if your song is in the key of F major, set the root key to F, and the scale to major. This will automatically set all notes in that key to be allowed, and disallow the others.

Finding the key

If you don’t know the key of your song, for example because you're using an instrumental track leased from a producer who doesn’t supply this information, you can let the ScaleFinder detect it for you automatically.

To do this, simply put the ScaleFinder plug-in on the audio track of the instrumental, press the detect scale button, and start playback in your DAW to feed the audio into the plug-in. After a few seconds, the ScaleFinder will update the root and scale values to match the key of your song.

Once the key has been detected, you can easily apply it to all loaded CrispyTuner instances by pressing the Send to CrispyTuner button at the bottom.

For a more detailed explanation of the ScaleFinder, please refer to its user manual.

Adjust tuning strength

Once the key of your song has been set, you can play around with the tuning knob. This value affects how subtle or extreme the tuning will be.

If you want the effect to be less noticeable, and only assist you with some minor pitch insecurities, turn it towards the left for a higher milliseconds value.

If you want to achieve an extreme effect, turn it all the way to the right. Values close to 0ms will give you a sound similar to that in many songs from artists like T-Pain or Travis Scott.

Getting this value right is a subjective task, and it all depends on your personal preference as a musician! It’s a good idea to play around with different tuning strengths until you find something that fits.

Conclusion

The CrispyTuner’s simple mode makes it easy to achieve a vocal tuning effect in no time. It avoids overwhelming you by reducing the interface to the most important settings.

Nevertheless, the CrispyTuner is an incredibly powerful tool that allows fine-grained control over a lot of parameters, giving you maximum control over the sound of the vocal tuning.

More advanced features are explained in-depth in the user manual. If you want to know more about what the CrispyTuner offers, make sure to take a look there for instructions.
